Our take

Noctie is the first AI chess coach that felt genuinely interactive to me rather than scripted. The ability to ask "why not knight to f5 instead?" and get a real answer grounded in the position is something DecodeChess and the Chess.com coach still struggle with. It's not a titled player, and I've caught it bluffing, but for a sub-2000 player looking for a training partner who explains things, it's a great first choice.

Noctie.ai is a conversational AI chess coach and training partner. You can play games against it at adjustable strength, get plain-English explanations of its moves, and ask follow-up questions about positions — all in a chat-style interface built around a chess board.

It’s a newer entrant compared to DecodeChess or Aimchess, and it pushes harder on the “conversation” side of coaching.

Pros

  • Feels like a real tutor — you can ask follow-up questions mid-game
  • Adjustable playing strength; the bot plays at your level and explains its moves
  • Fast free tier that's genuinely usable, not just a teaser

Cons

  • Explanations can drift into LLM-style fluency without real depth in quiet positions
  • Limited platform support (web only as of writing)
  • Still a young product — features ship and sometimes regress week-to-week
